You Are Not Alone

You Are Not Alone - Video | History Album | Videos from History
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"You Are Not Alone" was the second single from his multi-platinum album HIStory. The song was written by R&B singer-songwriter R. Kelly and became the first single ever to debut at number one in the Billboard Hot 100.

Chart Performance

"You Are Not Alone" became the second most-successful Michael Jackson single released in the 1990s, after "Black or White". The song peaked at number one in many countries around the world, including the UK, the U.S., New Zealand, Ireland, France and Switzerland.

In the UK, it debuted at number three and then climbed to number one where it stayed for two weeks. The single remained in the top five for seven weeks and was in the top 75 for fifteen weeks. This long run in the charts resulted in a gold sales award. The huge success of "You Are Not Alone" pulled HIStory back into the top-ten.

In the U.S., the single broke a Billboard record by being the first-ever single to debut at number one on the Hot 100 singles chart. Although it debuted at number one, it only spent one week at the top, and Michael has not had a number one single on the Hot 100 since. It also debuted at number one on the magazine's R&B chart, where it remained for four weeks. Airplay was excellent with a number two peak position on the Hot 100 Airplay chart and a number one position on Billboard's R&B Airplay chart (where it stayed for seven weeks). Single sales were strong with a peak position of number two on the Billboard Hot 100 Sales chart, number one on the Billboard R&B Sales chart, and number three on the Billboard Maxi-single Sales chart. The single went Platinum in the U.S. for sales of over one million copies.

Lyrics

Another day has gone
Im still all alone
How could this be
Youre not here with me
You never said goodbye
Someone tell me why
Did you have to go
And leave my world so cold

Everyday I sit and ask myself
How did love slip away
Something whispers in my ear and says
That you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though youre far away
I am here to stay

But you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though were far apart
Youre always in my heart
But you are not alone

lone, lone
Why, lone

Just the other night
I thought I heard you cry
Asking me to come
And hold you in my arms
I can hear your prayers
Your burdens I will bear
But first I need your hand
Then forever can begin

Everyday I sit and ask myself
How did love slip away
Something whispers in my ear and says
That you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though youre far away
I am here to stay

For you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though were far apart
Youre always in my heart
For you are not alone

Whisper three words and Ill come runnin
And girl you know that Ill be there
Ill be there

You are not alone
For I am here with you
Though youre far away
I am here to stay
For you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though were far apart
Youre always in my heart

For you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though youre far away
I am here to stay

For you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though were far apart
Youre always in my heart

For you are not alone...

Quotes about Michael Jackson

  • When Michael Jackson sings it is with the voice of angels, and when his feet move, you can see God dancing.
  • There are two kinds of people in this world: Michael Jackson fans and losers.
  • Of every album I have listened to, the best of the year by far has been Invincible. Michael Jackson deserves a lot more credit than he is getting, one of the most influential performers of all time.
  • He is a very smart cookie, Michael. He knows what he wants, he knows what he is doing. I have nothing but admiration. Also, he is a very kind person.
  • He is what every artist looks up to...to be... one time become the next King of Pop.
  • My feelings about Michael Jackson are simple: I think that he's a human being like everyone else and I'm a huge fan of him.
  • Michael is magic and all magic people are somehow eccentric. Michael is one of the most lovable, kind and natural people I've ever known. I took him deeply to my heart. I would do everything for him and he would do everything for me.
  • Michael is the wisest and at the same time most naive person I know.
  • He's sort of a fawn in a burning forest. It's a nice place where Michael comes from. I wish we could all spend some time in his world.
  • I'd be proud to have that kid (Michael) as my son any day.
  • All this stuff about Michael being a weirdo — it's a pile of goddam... I've recorded a whole lot of these pop-musicians and this guy's the straightest of the goddam lot.
  • Michael I believed in you when you were a little kid, I believe in you now and I'll never stop believing in you!
  • Michael's a natural. He's a very hard worker and a super performer. But most of all he's a real human being.
  • Michael is a generous, honest, and sensitive human being, filled with amazing insight and the capacity for love. If this is weird, I want to go live on another planet.
  • I think Michael Jackson is the best entertainer to ever walk this planet. He dancers, sings and writes songs. He is one true legend.
  • The thing about Michael is he's hands down one of the most professional, most talented performers I have ever worked with. All the bro haa haa aside, when it comes down to it you can have 60 choreographed dancers up there and you know which one Michael is.
  • Ethics can be argued. You may think it's right. I may think it's wrong. The law is there to decide if it's allowed. Period. Yes. I would have bought the Beatles publishing rights if I had the opportunity.
  • Everyone's thinking they're the new W. Axl Rose, just running their mouths and living in this world where nothing is real. Like, it's really easy to write a couple of songs, but that doesn't mean you get to run your mouth. The only guy who can do that is Michael Jackson. He wrote Thriller, so he can say whatever the fuck he wants.
  • Working with Michael Jackson was probably the best recording experience of my life. He was totally cool, absolutely professional and a beautiful, beautiful guy. And let’s not forget, he's a musical genius.

Money

History Album | Videos from History
----------------------------------------------------------------
The song features Michael taking on the role of someone who would do "anythang" for money, and he sings about the various misdeeds he would commit for more money. In the chorus of the song, he states that he would do "anything - anythang - anything for money; I'd lie for you, die for you, even sell my soul to the devil".

The song itself takes on an open minded view on how greedy society has become and how some people would do almost anything to be rich or to gain money. The song also notes the corruption which money can spawn, Michael singing that "I'll never betray or deceive you my friend but - if you show me the cash then I will take it; If you tell me to cry, then I will fake it; if you give me your hand, then I will shake it; you'd do anything for money". Michael, in persona, also says that "you say you wouldn't do it for all the money in the world - I don't think so", recognizing the inherent flaw of such a phrase. Noticeably, Michael also ends each verse with the phrase "You'd do anything for money".

The main aim of the song is to satirize the lust for material possessions and money, a characteristic which has pervaded Western society. The character Michael plays is actually a stereotypical, yet extremely believable, representation of a Western citizen who's main goal in life is to seek and attain money by any means necessary.

He mentions some rich men such as John Pierpont Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, John Davison Rockefeller, Jean Paul Getty

Lyrics

Money.
Money...

Lie for it
Spy for it
Kill for it
Die for it

So you call it trust
But I say its just
In the devils game
Of greed and lust

They dont care
Theyd do me for the money
They dont care
They use me for the money

So you go to church
Read the holy word
In the scheme of life
Its all absurd

They dont care
Theyd kill for the money
Do or dare
The thrill for the money

Youre saluting the flag
Your country trusts you
Now youre wearing a badge
Youre called the just few
And youre fighting the wars
A soldier must do
Ill never betray or deceive you my friend but...

If you show me the cash
Then I will take it
If you tell me to cry
Then I will fake it
If you give me a hand
Then I will shake it

You do anything for money...

Anything
Anything
Anything for money
Would lie for you
Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil

Anything
Anything
Anything for money
Would lie for you
Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil

Insurance?
Where do your loyalties lie?
Is that your alibi?
I dont think so
You dont care
Youd do her for the money
Say its fair
You sue her for the money
Want your pot of gold
Need the midas touch
Bet you sell your soul
Cuz your God is such
You dont care
You kill for the money
Do or dare
The thrill for the money

Are you infected with the same disease of lust, gluttoney and greed?
Then watch the ones
With the biggest smiles
The idle jabbers...
Cuz theyre the backstabbers

If you know its a lie
Then you will swear it
If you give it with guilt
Then you will bear it
If its taking a chance
Then you will dare it

You do anything for money...

Anything
Anything
Anything for money
Would lie for you
Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil

Anything
Anything
Anything for money
Would lie for you
Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil

Anything
Anything
Anything for money
Would lie for you
Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil

Anything
Anything
Anything for money
Would lie for you
Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil

You say you wouldnt do it
For all the money in the world
I dont think so
If you show me the man
Then I will sell him
If you ask me to lie
Then I will tell him
If youre stealing with god
Then you will hell him

You do anything for money

Anything
Anything
Anything for money
Would lie for you
Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
(repeat 8 times)
